It was basically two and a half hours of non-stop, amazing singing, with a small fifteen minute intermission in the middle. It wasn't really advertised at all, despite the OGs in the cast, which is kind of unusual (usually they have fliers to former top star's OG things in the Tokyo Theater). I wouldn't have known about it if M hadn't posted about it. Originally it was scheduled for only one performance, but they added a second at 6:30, so I guess it must have sold out fairly quickly. To be quite honest, I think Kanamin basically blew everyone else out of the water, although Ruirui amazed me in being nearly as strong. I fell more than a bit in love with Sakamoto Kenji and Oka Kojiro.

There were only two disappointments. One was that in the tentative program they had posted online, they said someone would sing "Stars" (Les Mis), which I adore, but that got changed. The other I'll get to in its own time.

ExpandI spent three hours on this. Why? XD )

Oh, yes, and there were a ton of OGs in the audience, to judge from all their blog posts, but I'm afraid the only person I spotted was a young Hanagumi otokoyaku and I'm still not sure who she was, other than that the Hanagumi fan ladies I was with recognized her and ran over to talk to her. (I spotted her as looking very much like an otokoyaku before they took off, but wasn't 100% sure.)

...I keep remembering things to add. Despite the disappointing performance, I still bought Zunko ♥senjafuda♥. I've never seen an OG selling senjafuda before. They're from Diana. Which reminds me that Wataru sent, like, three enormous bouquets. One to Zunko, one to one of the male actors (though I can't remember now which), and one to .... now I can't remember if it was Kanamin or Ruirui. Oops.

A Kiss to the Flames:

I really liked this show. ....Hey, stop staggering around and clutching at your heart. Cynicism doesn't look well on you. Anyway, I really liked this show. [livejournal.com profile] wao_wao brought her copy over a couple of weekends ago, after patiently suffering through hoards of Tsukigumi shows for months. Both the story and the music were well done, and for a show with such a dark setting, there was something very bright and crisp about it. I think I spent about 15% of this show squealing over the return of villain Hatsukaze Midori. I've said it a million times, but I'll say it again: that woman plays villains better than anyone else I know. Due attention was also paid to the conscripting of musumeyaku into otokoyaku uniforms for large ensemble scenes. Wao Youka's character had two rather awesome wigs. I think I have a weak point for awesome wigs. Also, I think I'm coming to enjoy Wao better these days. Maybe the shock of Fersen is finally wearing off, two years later. Anyway, the costumes and wigs were all great. Even the roomie had to comment on Yamato Yuuga's cool dreds on one of his wanders into the kitchen. (Actually, as an aside, I don't think G has ever sat down and watched a sequence of Takarazuka for so long as he did for this show. It must have been Tani's dreds.) Itsuki Chihiro. Itsuki-san as a female gypsy. I- I didn't even recognize her. So many awesome bonus points to her. *hearts* The shadow effects they played with throughout this show were also incredibly awesome. They definitely had fun with them. I, ah, don't think anything needs to be said about the infamous Hanafusa Mari-in-a-blanket scene, right?

All in all, a really good show. The only problems I had with it were gypsies with forges? And Gaichi's floppy hat. ;) Ah, and perhaps not enough of those adorable gypsy boys. Yes, more gypsy boys is a must. :(

Neo Voyage:

A cool revue show. Anything with pirates has to be cool, of course! Although the Halloween scene was really... creepy. In a not good way. XD There is nothing quite so awesome as the combination of fedora, blues, gangsters, and angst. I'm still debating over the piano scenes. It was definitely pretty. Maybe not quite my style, although Piano Demon Gaichi was... cute. And to finish off this review: There's nothing quite like a Wao and Hana-chan pair dance, is there? I can definitely see why this revue is a favorite of a lot of my Soragumi fan friends!

What I Thought:

You know, I'm not sure if I should admit this, but I actually liked this show. However, it was pretty borderline. It was my love for the actresses that kept me into it, after I started wincing at each new "comical" moment. When the lead musumeyaku character's name is Madonna Carey, you know you're in trouble. And, I, er, ah, fast-forwarded through all of the songs. Even some of Saijou Mie's, and usually I like her singing. The songs and costumes were just spectacularly awful. No, I take that back. There were a couple of redeeming costumes: Yoshizuki Eri's dresses and wraps kept me endlessly entertained, Keiju Mana's makeup and wig were spectacular, and Cydo's beat-up jumper he appeared in for the first number was cute. Ah, the first number! I liked the first number! Okay, there were a few entertaining songs in there I didn't fast-forward through. Most of them Eri-san's.

Some of the characters were pretty awesome, even under the cheap jokes. Yoshizuki Eri as the evil stepmother was a touch of brilliance. Koshino Ryuu's gay costume rental shop owner killed me. Repeatedly. As did the evil stepbrothers: Kiriya Hiromu and Kusunoki Keika. Ryuu and Keika together... oh god. I couldn't breathe for a few seconds. Yamato Yuuga's Cydo (I know, should be Sid, but the poster on the stage says "Cydo") was a cute guy, and a likable character. Pretty impressive for a ken-3, even if she did do the cyclops eyebrow thing a little too often. Mie's character, on the other hand... Well, I loved how bitchy she was, actually. It was refreshing. I wanted to cuddle poor Misato Maya in this show. It just doesn't pay to be the evil lady's footmat, darlin'. All of the band members were cute, and as I said, Keiju's makeup and wig were amazing. Shijou Rui played the little boy again. No comment on Samba-Elvis!Daddy. No comment on Guille's family, except to say that they needed to kill the taco gag. Oh, and the granny was pretty cool. Oh, I give up. I have so much love for these actresses, I can't even dislike their awful characters. *grins* Not even drunken, homeless, Santa Claus-suited Misa Noeru.

I would say... this show is LUNA-esque ridiculous. Just... very odd components all thrown together. I can see it being a secret favorite of some fans. ;)

What I Thought:

I really, really love this show for a rather unusual reason. It's one of the few shows (not counting music salons) where I believe the lead musumeyaku part is more interesting/important than the lead otokoyaku part. Hanase Mizuka's Viola is really a great character. Even Takarazuka had a hard time staging Twelfth Night without Viola. She pro-active, she's fun, she's mature enough to think things through. And, of course, she's madly in love with Orsino. This was 1999, so Yamato Yuuga still hadn't quite overcome her fish-faces and eyebrow twitches, but I really liked her Orsino better than her role in Cinderella Rock. Plus, she had pretty poets blouses. Ozora Yuuhi as Sir Toby was a very fun, rather amusing character. She seemed more high-nosed aristocrat than drunk, but her scheming definitely brought out some of the best scenes in the show (like the duel between Viola and Sir Andrew). Casting Natsukawa Yura as Olivia was a stroke of genius. Ritsu Tomomi makes a perfectly ridiculous Marvolio, but makes him perhaps a little too sympathetic? Mayama Haru seemed to have lost ten years as she played the jester Feste, my second favorite character in this show after Mizuka's Viola. Shijou Rui's Sir Andrew was... oh lord. How did they ever think that girl would be an otokoyaku, when she kept getting type-cast in these silly, squeaky, adorable roles? I got major slashy vibes from Kaji Yuuki's Sebastian and Narumi Jun's Antonio, who were great together.

Altogether, a really fun, really well done comedy. It's silly without being too slapstick, and has some fun songs and dances. And the casting was A+!

What I Thought:

This isn't my favorite Rika show by a long shot. It's not a bad show; it's just not the kind of setting and plot that really appeals to me. In a way, the complete depression of this show reminds me of the early 70s shounen ai manga like "Kaze to Ki no Uta", and I never really got into those either. How much depression and schoolboy angst do you need? I was surprised, because compared to the many copies of "Buenos Aires no Kaze", this video is relatively rare in auctions. But I guess it calls out more to the Japanese fans. Heck, maybe a lot of you would really love this show too.

I was also terribly disappointed that they had all this vocal talent and didn't take advantage of it. Mihara Shiho didn't get a single solo, and only one duet with Rika; a rather lack-luster song. Similarly, Hatsukaze Midori didn't get a solo either, only one really obnoxious song with the other schoolboys at the very beginning. The songs themselves were mostly reworked Sondheim, and while not performed badly, weren't really that great either.

Oh.My.God. So, I'm watching Immortal Lovers, and it's ... okay. Rui is a very strong George Sand, and I really like how much her singing has improved lately. Tani is ... excellently disollute, playing a young(ish), too-impulsive, and often-drunken Alfred. However, throughout much of the play I felt the two were trying too hard. I think you shouldn't be able to feel the effort an actress is putting into her role, and their movements were sometimes very stiff. BUT, on the other hand, when they clicked, they clicked marvelously. That scene where Tani is drunk on the floor with her head lolling as George's friend completely blasts her for being a selfish bastard... I LOVED it! And..... that scene. That infamous scene where Tani practically sticks her hand up Rui's skirt. There is.... rolling. And.... gropping of a very un-Takarazuka nature. o.0 They gave Zunko and Hana-chan's Carmen scene a run for its money and left it in the dust, I tell you what.

I probably shouldn't have spent more time adoringly watching Ebira Kaoru, Chiga Teruko, and Itsumine Aki, should I? But all three Senka ladies were very good, and slightly-evil Ebira-san is not to be missed!

Music and dancing didn't leave me wowed, for the most part. There were a few I liked, but some were also rather monotonous. However, there was a piece that I know I know. I could hear theoriginal Enlgish lyrics in my head, just on the far side of that wall of recognition. It's a song from another musical, but what is it?! The title in this show is "Dare mo Inai". I remember lines about trumpets... and siezing the day... damn, this is going to bug me until I can remember, and then I'm going to kick myself for not having remembered earlier.

Also, there was this one musumeyaku whose voice totally and completely blew me away. She's the one who sang "Ai no Yume". I have to look her up. Ah, Kazuno Miou.

This was actually filmed on the final night, so they included the speeches after the show on the DVD. *hearts always-dorky Tani*

ETA: Oh man! Got it! *indeed feels like an idiot* It's from 1776! "Is Anybody There?" *checks the credits* And there's not a SINGLE word about this little bit of borrowing, either. o.0

Thoughts: Well, I think this is the lowest budget show I've ever seen Takarazuka do, including dinner shows. ^^;; Erm, not the most impressive of sets, and some very, very bizarre costumes. Still, Gaichi, Yuuhi and Kiriyan wore leather from time to time, and this I wholeheartedly agree with. This show is called a "Bow Rock Performance", and that's just what it was: a chance for Gaichi to sing a million and one reworded Elvis songs. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. After all, Gaichi is my second-favorite zuka singer. It's just... the wigs... and the pink-dyed hair... Although I did like Yuuhi's turquoise. I've always like turquoise hair. ;) The ladies were great! No mousy musumeyaku here, thankyouverymuch! I think I actually liked Pearl more than Rouge, because Hoshino Hitomi turned her into the funniest character ever!

There was also a kickin' revue section at the end. Tap! Kiriyan tap dancing like she's on fire! ♥♥♥

So, not the greatest in terms of costumes and sets, but some really fun dance numbers, and excellent songs from the entire cast. Oh, man, the song Yuuhi sings about being in love with Pearl... Rocky is all "What, her?" thinking Blues is in love with Rouge. It's really cute.

Ozora Yuuhi Dinner Show "Spark!!"

[ TakaWiki Page ]

Main: Ozora Yuuhi
Others: Shijou Rui, Otoki Sunao, Ayana Oto, Ryuu Masaki

Wow. I have so much love for Yuuhi-kun. I can see why she probably won't ever make top, because she's not the most talented singer or actress (Although, my, does she do angsty well). However, she has great stage presence. (For anyone living under a rock or new to my journal, Yuuhi and Mizu are my two favorites of the current 'siennes.)

Anyway, the title was "Spark!!", which Yuuhi explained not only meant the sparks like you get off of fireworks, but also the spark of ... well-dressed, well-cultivated taste? Okay then, if you say so, Yuuhi. I think the talking bits were actually some of my favorites, because I never realized how amusing Yuuhi can be when she sets her mind to it. She was much more relaxed and comfortable than Kiriyan was during her dinner show, cracking jokes with the audience and with the younger 'siennes. I learned a lot about her, too. She teased Ruirui a bit, because during her last dinner show, Rui was her backup as well, but as an otokoyaku. She teased Hiromi because her big sister (Ayaki Nao) was in the audience. Everyone teased Masaki, because she was by far the youngest there (Her running gag was acting all self-important). My favorite bit was when Yuuhi came out in her sparkly purple number and began talking about how she had spent her whole Takarazuka career in Tsuki, and she was so, so sick of having to wear yellow during all the specials. So this time, she got to wear purple. Oh, so much love for Yuuhi. Particularly in a uniform. And in black leather. Mmmm....

The music was mostly a selection from musicals. List here. I was a bit sad that the Aerosmith song wasn't aired for copyright reasons, but really, what more do you need than Lion King and The Flinstones?

Also, good heavens, where did all the men come from? I've never seen so many men in a Takarazuka audience. Ever.

The cool thing about the DVD that I got this Sky Stage program on was that it included an hour of Sky Stage News from last July. *glee* And at the end was a section with Masaki and some Tsukigumi musumeyaku (yes, I'm one of those terrible people who rarely pays attention to the poor musumeyaku) interviewing people about Golden Steps: Hayama-sensei (who always seems to end up in these interviews. She does seem cool.), Asako & Kanami, Yuuhi & Kiriyan. They cracked me up, and I am now a total Ryuu Masaki fan. Such a cutie, and how could I not love a baby 'sienne who uses "dragon" in her stage name?

Also, during the interview with Kiriyan and Yuuhi sitting side by side... I realized that Yuuhi has a bit of a lisp too. Two ladies with adorable sprinkles of beauty marks (usually hidden by stage makeup) and lisps. I love Tsukigumi....

Summary:

On Crescent Island, off the coast of England, a new archaeological site is being excavated: the Lunar Palace. The tycho of Uranus Net Company, Brian Keyes, is sponsoring a beauty contest on the island to choose "a companion for the moon prince", based on local legends. Rock star Alex is invited out to judge the contest. While there he stumbles upon a necklace on the site. The female archaeologist Eileen demands the return of an important artifact, and sparks fly between their two stubborn personalities. Meanwhile we learn that Brian Keyes is not what he seems -- he is actually working on mind-control and genetic alterations with the help of his mad scientist. While fleeing from Brian, who wants Alex's genius DNA, Alex, Eileen and their friends stumble across a hidden chamber belonging to the ancient Lunar Palace. There they manage to awaken the spirit of the Moon Prince, who died in a lover's suicide with his forbidden human companion. The Moon Prince in Alex's body sees Eileen, who reminds him of his lost love. Brian, seeing the new powers of Alex-cum-Moon-Prince, gets even more fired up to capture the singer.... Chaos ensues.

I'm actually working on a more detailed summary, scenes I-IV can be found here.

What I thought:

This was the second show that I ever saw, based on the excellent advice of [livejournal.com profile] mosellegreen. At that time I had no interest in Rika, and completely overlooked her villainous character. Now I love Brian Keyes quite madly, but I don't know if that's from repeated watchings, or from the fact that Rika became my favorite 'sienne. Mami is brilliant as Alex and the Moon Prince. She's just so beautiful in this show! Dan Rei is sweet, especially with Gaichi playing her tag-along archaeologist friend. And speaking of archaeologists ... well, that's me. How can I not love this show? A show with a song about "out of place artifacts"? A show where Tani is brain-washed into thinking that she's Elvis? A show which cracks me up every, single time, yet still manages to fit in a painfully beautiful lover's suicide?

There are no words for this show, really. I think most everyone has seen it, since DESPA is distributing the Sky Stage version. It has fedoras and feathers....and pimps and bunny-girls and clowns and turbans and afros and... yeah. You have to see it to believe it. This is Takarazuka Revue Crack at its finest.

The plot? Something along the lines of... soldier meets Red Flower. Soldier falls in love with Red Flower. Soldier follows Red Flower through various freaky worlds which may or may not be the product of too much sun in the desert.
