The Rose of Versailles Side-Story: André

Maybe it was because I was expecting the worse. Maybe it was because I'm used to being diametrically opposed to 80% of the fandom. Maybe it was because I've simply slipped off the deep end, but... I really didn't think Andre-hen was that bad. Actually, er, I liked it more than Legend. *cough*

I think I begin to understand the appeal of BeruBara in Takarazuka. I've never paid a huge amount of attention to musumeyaku costumes, particularly the enormous hoop-skirts, but I think they lose something in the recordings. Also, I think the costuming department really went to town when they bought the fabric this time around (either that, or they were using the bottom of the barrel -- some of the pattern combinations were, er, very Japanese).

But let's do this systematically:

Overall, I liked both halves. I'm going to try to go and see it again next weekend. But I probably won't spend the money to buy the full-price DVD.

All in all, I'd recommend it for everyone, even with the lack of music, because I think the funny moments will keep you entertained even through the longer dialogues. And because Yuuhi is Yuuhi. And because of Hikaru's little mustache. And because the cast will knock your socks off.

Okay, to be honest I haven't really read through any of the Summer Makes Sense crew's reviews yet, but I think I started to by accident once and there was a general consensus that it was dull!? Are you all on crack? I know people have differences of opinion, so I think this is either one of those moments where I'm at odds with 90% of the community, or perhaps I'll read your reviews properly and find out I was mistaken....

One other caveat before I start, which is that I spent my impressionable pre-teen years reading things like The Blue Sword. I have this ... thing for Arabia meets early 19th-century Britain.

ExpandArabia - What I Thought: )

It wasn't until the intermission that I realized that I hadn't thought about Osa even once. It wasn't like there was this huge gapping hole there; Hanagumi is whole, and strong, and amazing. I honestly, honestly believe that it might be my favorite troupe right now (and I am NOT just saying this because Yuuhi transferred there). I know this sounds like sacrilege to a lot of people, but give them a chance. They might just knock your socks off.

ExpandRed Hot Sea - What I Thought: )

I always have a hard time reviewing revues, because they tend to either be ones I love, where I love every single mad detail, or ones I just found blah. This was one I loved, every bit of it.

(PS - I think a couple people might have missed it without meaning to, so in case you're wondering why there isn't any iride information, or anything like that, check this post.)

What I Thought:

This isn't my favorite Rika show by a long shot. It's not a bad show; it's just not the kind of setting and plot that really appeals to me. In a way, the complete depression of this show reminds me of the early 70s shounen ai manga like "Kaze to Ki no Uta", and I never really got into those either. How much depression and schoolboy angst do you need? I was surprised, because compared to the many copies of "Buenos Aires no Kaze", this video is relatively rare in auctions. But I guess it calls out more to the Japanese fans. Heck, maybe a lot of you would really love this show too.

I was also terribly disappointed that they had all this vocal talent and didn't take advantage of it. Mihara Shiho didn't get a single solo, and only one duet with Rika; a rather lack-luster song. Similarly, Hatsukaze Midori didn't get a solo either, only one really obnoxious song with the other schoolboys at the very beginning. The songs themselves were mostly reworked Sondheim, and while not performed badly, weren't really that great either.

What I Thought

I wasn't extremely impressed by either Utako or Mimi when I watched this show, though they both did a fine job. I watched bits and pieces of it again while I was checking on cast and grabbing some screen shots, and I think I enjoyed it more this second time through, but it's still not really a show to my taste. The drama is very grand; the music as well. It's all a bit too much for me. However, there were some fun dances and costumes, and Maya-san outdid herself in her one short scene *grin*. Kaname was rather scarce for a 2nd-rank otokoyaku. o.0 She made an appearance at the beginning and at the very end as Henry, and at the wedding ceremony she was the "taboo singer", whatever that's supposed to be. I was most surprised by Natori Rei, whom I'm so used to seeing in stodgy old butler roles that I almost didn't recognize her as the island witch. I thought Harukaze Hitomi did an excellent job with the role she was handed, working hard to keep the character believable and sympathetic.

What I Thought

Utako is a dork. A cute dork, with moments of brilliance, but over-all, a dork. She reminds me too much of a goofy, over-enthusiastic puppy for me to take her seriously, and all I've seen her in so far are two rather depressing, tragic, love stories. What does this tell us? Well, it tells me I really wish I had one of her comedies..... Kodama Ai reminds me eerily of Ayano Kanami at times. I liked her much more in this than in Minami no Aishuu; the more mature role suited her very well. Her singing is always a pleasant surprise. Kaname must be the cutest evil fallen angel in the history of the universe. Luckily she has a good evil smirk. Non-chan slayed me dead again and again. Too cute! Too cute! *sniffles*

The heaven scene scared me. I was very worried what the rest of the show would look like, but luckily we left behind the horrid blond wigs, angel wings, and sacharine singing fairly quickly. The next big song number was at the university and I loved it. It was definitely my favorite song in the show. There wasn't really much dancing, beyond Utako's table dance in the bar and the angsty dance of regret towards the end. Over-all it felt more like a play than a musical, which brings us to the acting. I think Kodama Ai was my favorite actress. Particularly her scene in the mental hospital: "He loves me, he hates me, he loves me, he hates me, he hates me, he hates me, he hates me..." *shivers* Everyone else was, well, all right, but not brilliant. Oh! Non-chan was pretty brilliant. ;) But Kaname kind of hammed it up a little too much, and Utako spent way too much time being a dork. *sigh*

Info & summary

I do love Miki when she's being all swanky. And oh, hey, Komu in Flower! And a slimy Osa!

What more do you need, really?

The songs and dances don't really stick in my mind (I did like the Russian KGB spies/mafia song, but they sang it way too many times.), but this is pure Bow Hall plotty fun. Plus... Miki in black leather.

.... Do I get another tin of biscuits? *shameless beggar*
