What I Thought:

I saw the Amami Yuuki version. Sorry, this will be short because I watched it months and months ago.

Well. It's very Takarazuka in that it's this horrible, terrible tale of betrayal and death and assassins, but it's also rather a comedy. And the two spirits of the mirror are rather strange, interspersed narrators with random song and dance numbers which don't fit the rest of the mood of the piece. I liked the comedy bits quite a lot, but the overall effect was rather disjointed.

Mmm, to be harshly honest I'd say it's a bit too maudlin and not a very coherent piece, without very good music or sets or costumes.

BUT then you have to factor in the cast, which I adore, and the fact that I love Yuri and Kayo together, and that Shiokaze Kou and Wakao Risa were just AWESOME villains, and Ritsu Tomomi was amazing gruff craziness. Aoi Miya was hilarious as the foolish detective in the Sherlock Holmes cape. Aihara Serika was beautifully evil. Koshino Ryuu gave a lovely, adorable ken-2 death scene. And then there was spot-the-Saeko, spot-the-Yuuhi, and spot-the-Mizu♥

The sequence near the beginning where they introduce all of the cast outside of the hotel I LOVE and could watch again and again and again.

So all in all I have to say that I enjoyed it and I love philosophical assassin Yuri very, very, very much♥♥

With the usual warnings of sloppy translating, and odd-sounding English because I'm lazy (though Lucia helped me fix a couple of bits up). For Lucia, and for everyone who misses Osa and Tomomi♥

Summary on the Takarazuka Wikipedia.

What I Thought:

I am probably the last person on the planet to see this show, but here you go anyway.... ;)

LOVE.

It peddled to all of my weaknesses: Osa in pinstripe suits, gangsters in pinstripe suits, Hatchi in pinstripe suits, Un-chan in pinstripe suits (are we sensing a theme here?)... No, but seriously, the otokoyaku wardrobes? Deadly. The musumeyaku outfits were probably very pretty, but I- Wait, wait, I remember Lucia's repeated mention of little red... hats? No, no, that was Tuxedo Jazz. I definitely remember Sakurano in a little red dress, so it was a little red something. The sets blended in and don't stick out in my memory, except for the station, of course, and the sewers. Slightly subdued for a Grand Theater show. Music and lyrics were done in a safe, lovely style that suited Osa's gorgeous voice to a T.

Overall, this show is now my second-favorite Osa show (after Kurotokage). The plot might not be Tony-award wining material, and I felt the musumeyaku were in many ways after-thoughts, but the suits, and the otokoyaku, and the shoulder holsters, and Mattsu's mustache, and Hatchi's tattoo (yes, I have weird kinks, leave me alone)... Ngh. And Osa was as powerful as ever, making a grand ... adieu.

Star Troupe Bow Hall, 1997

This was actually one of the first Bow Hall shows that I actually saw, a couple of years ago, when a friend loaned it to me. Although there were a few actresses and bits that got my attention, overall I was underwhelmed. Now I've finally had a chance to watch it again to write up a summary for the wiki....

Elisabeth
2007 Snow Troupe

Leads: Mizu Natsuki & Shirahane Yuri

[ TakaWiki ] [ TCA Shop ] [ ENAK Sumire Style GRAPH ]

To be honest, I wasn't sure if I wanted to see this show, at the same time that I was dying to see it. Since I first fell in love with Takarazuka, Mizu was one of my magic trio (Rika, Yuuhi, Mizu). It's been kind of hard watching everyone suddenly become a fan because she's a top star now and because she happened to get to play Death. I know, it's not rational, but that's the way it is. Because of that, the DVD has been kind of low on my priority list. I really wanted to see Hoshikage first, but I haven't been able to afford it yet. But Julie brought Elisabeth over with her, so of course I gave in to the temptation in .2 seconds flat. ;)

And of course, I was really worried. I wanted to like my top combi together, but I'd heard lukewarm things about Shirahane Yuri's Sissi.

So...

Overall, I found the changes they made interesting. Often I couldn't say: "Oh, I liked the old way better", or "Oh, I like this way better". I think this new round of Elisabeths is going to be just different enough that they're not comparable with the first five productions.

You know, I remember not writing up a review of Cinderella Rock, but I know I wrote up something for Twelfth Night. I remember doing it. o.0 *shakes head*

What I Thought:

I really, really love this show for a rather unusual reason. It's one of the few shows (not counting music salons) where I believe the lead musumeyaku part is more interesting/important than the lead otokoyaku part. Hanase Mizuka's Viola is really a great character. Even Takarazuka had a hard time staging Twelfth Night without Viola. She pro-active, she's fun, she's mature enough to think things through. And, of course, she's madly in love with Orsino. This was 1999, so Yamato Yuuga still hadn't quite overcome her fish-faces and eyebrow twitches, but I really liked her Orsino better than her role in Cinderella Rock. Plus, she had pretty poets blouses. Ozora Yuuhi as Sir Toby was a very fun, rather amusing character. She seemed more high-nosed aristocrat than drunk, but her scheming definitely brought out some of the best scenes in the show (like the duel between Viola and Sir Andrew). Casting Natsukawa Yura as Olivia was a stroke of genius. Ritsu Tomomi makes a perfectly ridiculous Marvolio, but makes him perhaps a little too sympathetic? Mayama Haru seemed to have lost ten years as she played the jester Feste, my second favorite character in this show after Mizuka's Viola. Shijou Rui's Sir Andrew was... oh lord. How did they ever think that girl would be an otokoyaku, when she kept getting type-cast in these silly, squeaky, adorable roles? I got major slashy vibes from Kaji Yuuki's Sebastian and Narumi Jun's Antonio, who were great together.

Altogether, a really fun, really well done comedy. It's silly without being too slapstick, and has some fun songs and dances. And the casting was A+!

I wonder if the lack of lifts have something to do with the fact that Gun-chan didn't stay on as Mariko's partner? They seemed to have very nice chemistry together otherwise....
