ALL ABOUT RIKA
Shibuki Jun Concert, 2000

[ TakaWiki Page ]

Cast: Shibuki Jun, Miho Keiko, Amaki Kaori, Yuu Naoki, Mirai Yuuki, Ai Youko, Sugata Kou, Tachibana Riya

Summary: See the TakaWiki page

What I Thought:

Oh, I love this concert. It has all the sides of Rika I love. Pop Rika, dangerous lady Rika in a slinky red dress, Rika dancing the part of the swan prince, Rika singing "Stay", bad-boy Rika in leather, Rika giving us a slide show of her life for over half an hour....

Trust me, if you're even a smidgon of a Shibuki Jun fan, you need this show. It was a continual heart-attack the entire way through. :D

So. Apparently everyone and their mama was on the Berlin '00 Tour. I knew this, for I had a Graph article with the cast list and such on it. But still, reading that and seeing it are two different things entirely. I never expected to own a copy of this show, despite my Rika obsession, because I'm not sure that it was even ever made into a video and sold. Imagine my joy at finding someone with a Sky Stage copy!

Main Stars: Shibuki Jun, Matsumoto Yuri

Takarazuka Snow・Moon・Flower

Despite being called an "oriental musical", this is basically a revue show with oriental costumes. Disjointed (but gorgeous!) segments with songs and dances. Loved it! Particularly loved Kashige as the "princess" seducing the young nobleman (Rika). My first real exposure to Rika in a kimono. Love! Love! And Matsumoto-san was as elegent as ever.

Takarazuka Sunrise

A slightly more traditional revue show, if you discount the "Folk Song" section in German. o.0 So, how was Mirai Yuuki's German? I couldn't tell good German from bad German if my life depended on it. "Hard Boiled" had me in fits of joy, as always. I can't decide if I like Rika better as a stripey suit dancer, or as the lead singer. Choices, choices. Lots of Mizu. Oh, rapture.

Both good shows with excellent casts (otokoyaku and musumeyaku)!

So, I'm going to be productive today at the library, but before I condemn myself to 10 hours of absolute horror, a little fun.

Summary:

On Crescent Island, off the coast of England, a new archaeological site is being excavated: the Lunar Palace. The tycho of Uranus Net Company, Brian Keyes, is sponsoring a beauty contest on the island to choose "a companion for the moon prince", based on local legends. Rock star Alex is invited out to judge the contest. While there he stumbles upon a necklace on the site. The female archaeologist Eileen demands the return of an important artifact, and sparks fly between their two stubborn personalities. Meanwhile we learn that Brian Keyes is not what he seems -- he is actually working on mind-control and genetic alterations with the help of his mad scientist. While fleeing from Brian, who wants Alex's genius DNA, Alex, Eileen and their friends stumble across a hidden chamber belonging to the ancient Lunar Palace. There they manage to awaken the spirit of the Moon Prince, who died in a lover's suicide with his forbidden human companion. The Moon Prince in Alex's body sees Eileen, who reminds him of his lost love. Brian, seeing the new powers of Alex-cum-Moon-Prince, gets even more fired up to capture the singer.... Chaos ensues.

I'm actually working on a more detailed summary, scenes I-IV can be found here.

What I thought:

This was the second show that I ever saw, based on the excellent advice of [livejournal.com profile] mosellegreen. At that time I had no interest in Rika, and completely overlooked her villainous character. Now I love Brian Keyes quite madly, but I don't know if that's from repeated watchings, or from the fact that Rika became my favorite 'sienne. Mami is brilliant as Alex and the Moon Prince. She's just so beautiful in this show! Dan Rei is sweet, especially with Gaichi playing her tag-along archaeologist friend. And speaking of archaeologists ... well, that's me. How can I not love this show? A show with a song about "out of place artifacts"? A show where Tani is brain-washed into thinking that she's Elvis? A show which cracks me up every, single time, yet still manages to fit in a painfully beautiful lover's suicide?

Blue Moon Blue

There are no words for this show, really. I think most everyone has seen it, since DESPA is distributing the Sky Stage version. It has fedoras and feathers....and pimps and bunny-girls and clowns and turbans and afros and... yeah. You have to see it to believe it. This is Takarazuka Revue Crack at its finest.

The plot? Something along the lines of... soldier meets Red Flower. Soldier falls in love with Red Flower. Soldier follows Red Flower through various freaky worlds which may or may not be the product of too much sun in the desert.

I think I've become a Tom fan, but I'm not sure. Does that make any sense? It's not the instant ♥♥LOVE♥♥ that I had for Rika and all of Moon Troupe. It's a slowly growing appreciation, because how can you not have some interest in the "Top of the Tops"? I really wish I'd known back in August even a tiny smidgen of what I know now. I was totally under-whelmed by Tom then. I remember thinking that the second lead-role was more interesting (Wataru's part), but I had no idea that Wataru was actually the Top of Star Troupe..... ^^;;

I'm not extremely fond of the gaunt otokoyaku, I have this mothering urge to fatten them up.

Anyway, I resisted taking a ton of screen shots, because I know most of you have this one already, so it's just me blathering.

Department Store

o.0 What an odd revue show. What on earth was the point of that airplane? Anyway, I enjoyed this one, if only to see Aran Kei rapping. But there wasn't any part that I absolutely fell in love with. Although... Taatan's character getting bullied was way cuter than it should have been. No, Jen! Bullying is bad!

Costumes were alright, though they didn't blow me away. ExpandBut I did enjoy this one.... That scarf looked like fun. )

Gaisenmon

I don't think I would have been able to follow this one at all without Genevieve's translation. The plot is rather thick, isn't it? But I guess that's what happens when you wrap a novel into one short hour-and-a-half musical.

So, Takarazuka returns to its French-fascination with a musical about refugees in WWII Paris, just prior to its occupation. It's dark, and depressing, and really rather good. Not a Les Mis "Let us rise up against the oppressors!" makes you hum with energy kind of musical, but much more human drama. The main character is a German doctor living illegally in France without a visa or paperwork, just trying to get by. Tortured past? Check. Really a soft-hearted guy? Check. Ready to do cold-blooded murder nonetheless? Check.

The music and songs were good, and there were some that I really enjoyed, like "Tasogare no Pari" and "Yoishirete".

Lots of great actresses: Todoroki Yuu (Tom), Kouju Tatsuki (Taatan), Asami Hikaru, Aran Kei (Touko).

ExpandCostumes? Yay! Yay! Suits! Fedoras! ♥♥♥ )

I feel bad about saying such harsh things about Berubara, so I'd like to state for the record that Fersen's wig was very pretty.

Cosmos Troupe redeemed themselves with Bokyou wa Umi o Koete, which proves to me that Berubara just wasn't my kind of show. This time there were proper dance numbers and songs. I think Soragumi's strength is its musumeyaku, actually. They really stand out.

Still having problems with poor Youka Wao, though. That really is an unfortunate resemblance....

Natsuki Mizu is like ♥♥♥! I hear she's second otokoyaku for Snow Troupe now, so I may have to look into that. And Wataru Kozuki has a gorgeous voice; I'm so glad I got to see her live! It's too bad I didn't really know anything about her then (she's top star of Star Troupe now). And Mari Hanafusa played a double role, which was very cool.

The really sad thing is that this is a copy that was aired on NHK, so no revue show. No feathers... No sparkly....
