ETA: We did it! We raised $873! Thank you so much for your generosity, everyone!

Ahahahaha. So, not so funny story. Today I received an email from the TakaWiki webhost saying that my card had been declined to pay for this month’s hosting fees. Somehow I had lost track of time and two years had gone by since our last fundraiser. Yup, that’s right, we currently have $0.46 left in our TakaWiki hosting coffers. Sadly, we had to upgrade our hosting from $15-ish/mo to $30/mo because of how big the database has grown, so the money didn’t last as long as hoped.

SO! We need to raise some money. If we can raise $720, we’ll have the next two (2) years worth of fees all set to go. ($30/mo x 24 mo = $720)

So this is my urgent plea for everyone who uses the TakaWiki to please think about dropping a few dollars into the coffers. The English-language Takarazuka fandom has always been extremely generous; it’s the only way we’ve kept the TakaWiki up and running for 10+ years. Even if money is tight and there’s no way you can contribute, please pass on the word over various social media.

I’ll take down the page once we meet our goal.

Thank you all! -Jen (Feb. 14th, 2017)

I have a week off, which always seems so long, and then is over before you can blink. But I am determined to get a couple of reviews posted, to work on overhauling the TakaWiki some more (did you know its 10 year anniversary is in May?!), to get some translating and editing done for TIP, and... maybe to record more things for the podcast (dunno, this month has been a crazy one for everyone, which makes coordinating tough, and I bet it'll only get worse over the next couple of months).

So, small goals. ^^;;;

I'm loving that more people have been posting on LJ again lately. I need to kick myself back into gear and start commenting properly.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get more people involved with the TakaWiki again? I think now that the first group of editors is largely gone and a lot of the users are new they don't realize that it is a community database. We have some lovely users adding images and updating some things, which is definitely cool, but I know there are also a lot of new fans who speak Japanese and who are living in Japan and it would be wonderful to have them adding summaries and info and things...... I'm also thinking it may be time to overhaul portions of the site. Do we really need to lock the translations section? Are there better ways to organize the structure of the pages? The links section is so abysmally out of date there are no words. Anyway, those are some of the thoughts floating through my head.

Thank you, everyone, for all of your support. We have surpassed our goal! We have funding for 3+ years!

Our next step is to decide on a new domain name. Please go and vote in this poll and/or post your own suggestion!

(So many apologies for x-posting this everywhere. You can also find it on my tumblr, but I'd really appreciate any help spreading the word across all social media. Thank you!)

The fundraiser has started! We have 60 days to raise $575.

This money is for:

  • 3 years hosting costs for a VPS server on Dreamhost
  • a new domain name (to be voted on once we meet our goal)

Visit the Indiegogo page for more information and to learn how to contribute.

Every dollar counts!

Even if you can’t contribute financially, please spread the word!

A bit nervous we won't reach our goal in time. But, well, that will be a sign that we're not meant to be permanent, I suppose. Still, wouldn't this be a great way to celebrate our 10th anniversary: On a brand new private server?
ekusudei: (Default)
When I moved the TakaWiki over to my private server, it was meant to be a stop-gap measure while we figured out what was wrong with the original server. Going back to the original server is no longer an option, but I think it would be nice to have the TakaWiki back on a dedicated server again (with its own DNS). Among other things, it means it can be handed on to another web mistress with minimal fuss when the time comes that I can no longer look after it.

I really love the shared hosting service that I use (Surpass Hosting), who have amazing customer service and have always treated me like a queen (I never would have gotten the tikiwiki installed and running without their help and advice), but they don't offer PHP 5.5 (which we need to upgrade to tikiwiki 13.1). Does anyone have a suggestion of a reliable shared hosting service which does offer 5.5? Particularly one that you've used and have good evidence that the customer service reps are reliable and knowledgeable.

My service right now is a legacy from the former iteration of Surpass, so it's fairly cheap. Still, even if we were to purchase their current unlimited disk space/unlimited bandwidth hosting package, it would only be $17/mo if we paid for 3 years up-front ($612). I'd like to do it as a fixed fundraiser (think Kickstarter), so if we don't meet our goal, everyone gets their contributions back and we scrap the idea, so I was thinking of using Indiegogo. Add in a year's domain name registration, and we're probably looking at another $13 ($625 total). Calculate in their 4% fee for a successful campaign, and we'd need to raise $650.

Very doable, I think, considering our large and generous fandom. What do you all think?

Favorite romantic show / romantic pair?

Hey all! Desperately need suggestions for next month’s TakaWiki poll. Please spread the word (and don’t forget to add your own suggestions!).

You know if you don't help me all the choices are going to be tsukigumi.....

I.... just stumbled upon an academic article analyzing the TakaWiki. Doesn't look like it's been published in a peer-reviewed journal, though. Still. This is the best.thing.ever. *laughs* Although I think I might take exception to us TakaWiki Western fans as being labeled "shoujo." Oh, anthropologists.

PS - Merry, Lucia, you're famous. XD

Someone sent me a message regarding the various translations/romanizations for the title of Gu Bijin. Frankly, it's a bit of a mess on the TakaWiki because over the past 60 years the Revue has used different official English translations for different productions.

What do you all think? Choose one for the sake of uniformity and perhaps leave a note somewhere about the original English translation title, or leave each page with its official translation?

So, for this centennial year I've been doing a bunch of popularity polls on the TakaWiki.

January's was: "What is your favorite troupe?"

Results
1st = Snow (13)
2nd = Star (10)
3rd = Cosmos (9)
4th = Moon (8)
5th = Flower (7)

For the rest of this half of the year, I'll be doing two a month.

The first half of February was: "Who is your all-time favorite top star of Flower Troupe?"

Results
1st = Haruno Sumire (8)
2nd = Ranju Tomu (7)
3rd = Matobu Sei & Anju Mira (3 each)
5th = Maya Miki (2)
Aika Mire, Oura Mizuki, and Anna Jun each got one vote.

The current poll up is for favorite top musumeyaku of Flower, so go check it out and vote if you haven't already!

Oh, and I posted in [livejournal.com profile] takawiki_news, but for those of you who aren't watching that comm, the TakaWiki is down, we do know about it, and we're working on it.

I received a grand total of "0" replies for the post I put up last summer on the TakaWiki, so I suppose I'll see if I have any better luck with this particular dead social networking tool. T_T

Any ideas for polls for 2014? Or else you'll end up with 12 months of quizzes. ... Just sayin'.
ekusudei: (Default)
Okay, I think for next month's poll I'm going to do a "What show would you like to see revived for the 100th anniversary?" question.

So, please comment with some of the options you'd like for poll answers.
ekusudei: (Default)
I think I'll survive the end of the semester after all. ;)

I've decided we've beaten the poll ideas to death on the TakaWiki, so I'm changing over to quizzes for a while!

First up: How many performances have had the katakana word for "Christmas" in their main title?

Head over to the TakaWiki to make your guess. I'll be revealing the answers at the beginning of January when the poll changes over.

*head-desk*

I've been keeping a closer eye than usual on new members of the TakaWiki because we've been getting flooded with spam accounts over the past couple of weeks and I've been having to delete them manually. If I hadn't been, I probably wouldn't have noticed the six new accounts all tied to one email address. Which is fine, no rules against it, so I left them. And then, on a whim just now I wondered if.... I checked this month's poll, and sure enough, the mock accounts were all used to vote for the same person.

I am amused that the TakaWiki poll is worth cheating on to someone.

You see before you a very happy woman. They're done, they're done! The Performance Lists by Year are as complete as they can be made using recent published Revue data. Of course, there are errors in the published data, and there are human errors in typing out everything, and translation errors. So, please, if you find a mistake, fix it or let the TakaWiki editors know. :)

Also, fans have been adding information from older programs and such that isn't even included in the latest Revue publications, possibly lost knowledge (some show titles and dates from the 10s to 40s are missing, possibly lost in the chaos of the war years?), which I think is spectacular! We're filling in some of the gaps♥

Well, that only took four and a half years of everyone's lives. Heh. Enjoy. *grin*

The 5-kumi polls are now finished, and you can check the results here if you're curious.

I found it really, really interesting.

The mantra in Japan seems to be Dancing Hanagumi, Performance Tsukigumi, Nihonmono Yukigumi, Costume Hoshigumi, and Fresh Soragumi. But I think things change, and what was true ten or twenty years ago might not necessarily be true now (yet I still saw these titles dragged out in a magazine article earlier this year). I was curious what the slightly less biased (?) Western fandom would think.

Thanks for participating! ;)

I now return you to your usual "Best of" series, since no one had any other suggestions. *laughs*
