Ugggghhh... What a weekend. So, back when the P&P adaptation was announced, I was determined to see it. And then horrified when I realized it was only playing one weekend in Tokyo, because you just never know about weekend shows in Tokyo--sometimes they sell out incredibly quickly. So I lined up at the ticket machines ten minutes before they went on sale last month and snagged a ticket to the 3 PM show because I am lazy and that meant I could sleep in just that bit more on my weekend.

And then as I was idly flipping through ticket sales comparing shows a couple of weeks ago I realized just how badly Resurrection / Canon was selling and that there would be enough tickets left to breeze in five minutes before the curtain went up and still snag a seat. And so I decided to double-kangeki it on Saturday, especially since I hadn't been to the theater in two months and I was feeling withdrawal. ;)

But I ended up missing my train by about twenty seconds (curses to slow people blocking my escalators!), and the next wasn't for thirty minutes, so I actually ended up missing the first fifteen or so minutes of Resurrection. Oops. But, despite that, I have to say I really enjoyed this show. ..... I also realized that it was my first time seeing Hanagumi live since Gu Bijin. ...... oops. How did that happen? Oh, yes, Mame and Ayane retired and I started my campaign to actually save money. *sigh*

ANYWAY! Here is why Resurrection and Canon are fabulous and you should see them!

In conclusion, sometimes I'm really glad my taste is very different from the kind of shows that sell out like crazy, because it means I can slip in and get tickets like this♥ I would totally buy this DVD, because I really enjoyed both the musical and the revue.

PS - The one flaw, I almost forgot! "Dmitri" in katakana..... "Oh, Dormitory, how I love you!" ..... Kind of hard to keep up the angsty momentum when you want to crack up whenever the main character's name is said.

And the Revue:

From what other people said, I was expecting this to be a rehashing of other revues. And I was expecting to fall asleep or wander off to wash dishes fairly soon in, as most French-named revues do to me. But it had just enough Fujii-spirit to keep me alert and attentive. It moves very quickly and at a fairly quick pace even within numbers, and was actually rather nice. And now I shall have to kill you all for having admitted this deep, dark secret. *grin*

But, watching this and thinking of the last few Tsuki revues, I have come to realize that Hanagumi doesn't really dance very often these days, do they? Hm. Yet another very good reason to bring Tomu home♥

Ah. This was a good dinner show. Costumes in good taste, fun songs, overflowing with good humor. Yuuhi♥ She fits the dinner show format much more than you'd expect. I just love her dinner shows. ♥

A few tiny problems with mics coming loose on the night they recorded, but nothing that lasted for long. My only real problem was the drumming. Yuuhi seemed a bit like an elementary student who wanted to impress her parents. *grin* But it didn't last long.

Lots of use of the musumeyaku, as more than mere chorus. I was very impressed at how the show was constructed, actually.

Oh dear. I'm afraid I didn't like Takarazuka's "Phoenix" any more than I liked "Black Jack", when I saw it four years ago. Overall it was rather tasteless, and I'm afraid at some point my joy in tasteless 80s and 90s revues seems to have rubbed off a bit. It doesn't help that I'm not much of a Tezuka Osamu fan. (Heresy, I know.) I felt nothing but sorry for Misa Noeru, stuck in that Professor Ochanomizu get-up. :/

But there were a few scenes that redeemed it♥

* The Flora Planet scenes had a very pretty song for Morina Miharu to sing, and all of the young otokoyaku stars were in androgynous drag. Tamo and Gaichi were very pretty. :)

* I had never seen the Grand Theater role list for the revue, only the Tokyo casting, so was rather ecstatic when they got to the Our World scenes and it was RIKA DANCING WITH MIKI. Rika, such a girl. How did she ever make it as an otokoyaku? ♥

* The line dance was choreographed by Sha Tamae-sensei! It was really lovely, as you'd expect of Sha-sensei.

* There was one more, but now I've lost it again. Maybe it was the tuxedo number...?

And that's rather all I have to say about that. *laughs*

I am SO psyched about Gubijin, especially after reading the Kageki round-table. (OK, so the round-tables generally tend to have that affect on me, but still...)

Here's some bits and pieces, mostly copy-pasted from emails I've sent Lucia, so please don't mind the casualness. ;)

The Rose of Versailles Side-Story: André

Maybe it was because I was expecting the worse. Maybe it was because I'm used to being diametrically opposed to 80% of the fandom. Maybe it was because I've simply slipped off the deep end, but... I really didn't think Andre-hen was that bad. Actually, er, I liked it more than Legend. *cough*

I think I begin to understand the appeal of BeruBara in Takarazuka. I've never paid a huge amount of attention to musumeyaku costumes, particularly the enormous hoop-skirts, but I think they lose something in the recordings. Also, I think the costuming department really went to town when they bought the fabric this time around (either that, or they were using the bottom of the barrel -- some of the pattern combinations were, er, very Japanese).

But let's do this systematically:

Matobu: In general, there isn’t a lot of time in rehearsals for everyone to chat. But to work together on stage – is to understand the other person’s heart… I feel that through the roles we can see a new side of them. At the Chunichi, and Grand Theater as well, I’ve played close-friend roles with Eritan (Sou).

Sou: That’s right.

Matobu: And Hoge-chan (Ozora)’s close friend as well… right? {laughs} Playing such roles, there’s a sense at least that I’ve learned a lot about you.

Ozora: I suppose I’m the same, as Yuu (Matobu) says. When I came to Flower Troupe there wasn’t really time to have a leisurely talk with Yuu. I’d say through the stage, and each other’s styles of working – our attitudes towards the stage – there we could come to see the personalities.

Matobu: Yes, that’s right.

Ozora: Even after a year, there were people whom I thought I might understand as we started “The Legend of the Great King and Four Gods”, and suddenly I could see them clearly, and it made things interesting….

Sou: Did they change from the year before?

Ozora: Eritan didn’t change at all. {laughs} “A thug.” Write that in big letters! )

Ah, dammit, Hankyu went there after all. I will be sad to see little Koko Maria go -- she's possibly the only 'sienne with a normal bodyweight, and she lists McDonalds french fries as her favorite food. We need more of that in the Revue, not less.

And [livejournal.com profile] csh_121476 pointed out that there *is* one rather important Hanagumi upperclassman who isn't in the cast lists for their upcoming shows -- their fukukumichou, Takashou Mizuki. Somehow I always manage to overlook poor Saori-san, who really isn't on my radar, despite [livejournal.com profile] princesslucia's best efforts. Well, I hope this doesn't mean she's going to be making a quiet exit at the end of the run. :(
